The Board of Trustees

 Chair: Deborah Berry

I have been Chair of HYS for 2 years, HYS is a fantastic Choir that enables and empowers young people to sing, perform and work as part of a team. The Board is very important for working behind the scenes to ensure that the Choir continues to be financially healthy and effective.

I have 2 children who have been part of HYS, Zander who left 4 years ago and Maya who continues to sing in the choir. They have both enjoyed their time in the choir and I believe it’s a great organisation to give something back to.

Vice Chair: Karen Webster

I have been a member of the board for the last 9 years and Vice Chair for the last 2. My son Tom was a member for 10 years and is still involved behind the scenes looking after marketing and the website.

Company Secretary: Rachel Taylor

My son is a proud member of Halifax Young Singers. I am trying to help the choir to be a success by assisting with the administration, leaving the choir to sing. I have previous experience of being a Trustee of charities and a lifetime of being actively involved in music.

Board Member: Louise Chadderton

I have been a member of the HYS board for 2 years. I have 2 children in the choir and they really love it. I love singing and working behind the scenes in this vibrant youth choir.

HYS is committed to Safeguarding and protecting the welfare of young people. HYS has both a Safeguarding and Anti-bullying policy in operation.

All board members, Musical Director and accompanist have DBS checks.

HYS is the registered  trademark of Halifax Young Singers Limited.

Halifax Young Singers is now in its twenty-sixth season. The choir meets on Thursday evenings at The Carlton Centre and numbers around 70 singers ranging in age from 8 - 21.

As well as giving our own concerts we perform with partners such as Musica Kirklees, The Lindley Band, Brighouse and Rastrick Band and many local choirs, often performing in Halifax Minster and Huddersfield Town Hall.

In July 2012, we were honoured to perform at the Piece Hall to welcome the Olympic Torch into Halifax. We were joined on stage by former member Hannah Cockcroft, who went on to win 5 Paralympic gold medals and was awarded an MBE.

We've toured France and Germany, taken productions of Pirates of Penzance and Ruddigore to the G&S Buxton Festival, made CDs, appeared on television, commissioned our own pieces, presented full-scale works such as Rutter's Requiem and Stainer's Crucifixion and enjoyed every minute of it! If it's singable - we sing it!

We like competing in music competitions and over recent years have been very successful in the Eskdale Festival in Whitby, the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham and the 'Mrs Sunderland' in Huddersfield where, in February 2016, we gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the U19 Young People's Choir Class. In February 2017, we won the Arthur Rooke trophy for giving the best performance of the day.

The aims of Halifax Young Singers are to encourage young people to enjoy singing and to develop their vocal skills. The choir gives young people a real feeling of what can be achieved through teamwork and being part of an extremely successful group.

Halifax Young Singers is friendly, welcoming, encouraging and fun, but we work hard and this shows in our performances.

Why don't you come along and see what we do? We'd love to see you and new members are always welcome.

At present we have a loyal and enthusiastic membership of around 70 singers, who are either members of the Youth Choir or Chamber Choir depending on their age. The Youth Choir is normally for singers, both girls and boys, in years 5-8 at school. The members of the Chamber Choir are in year 9 and above and sing in four parts.

Wherever possible we bring all singers together to make a great sound - as we have proved in competitions and concerts!
